PALAWAN’S LARGEST IRRIGATION PROJECT TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY OF 425 FARMERS IN ABORLAN

NIA MIMAROPA – A new chapter in agricultural development begins for farmers in the Municipality of Aborlan, Palawan as the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) formally inaugurated the Ibato-Iraan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) on July 23, 2026.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and NIA Administrator Engr. Eddie G. Guillen led the ceremony, emphasizing the national government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s irrigation infrastructure and supporting Filipino farmers.

Recognized as the largest irrigation project in the Province of Palawan and the island’s first reservoir-type irrigation system, the Ibato-Iraan SRIP is set to provide year-round irrigation water supply to 1,072 hectares of agricultural land across the barangays of Sagpangan, Iraan, and Isaub. The project is expected to benefit 425 farmers and their families by increasing farm productivity, improving crop yields, and enhancing household incomes.

For years, farmers in the area have relied on unpredictable rainfall, making every planting season uncertain. With the completion of the irrigation system, they can now plan their cropping seasons with greater confidence, improve farm productivity, and achieve more stable harvests and higher incomes. The project’s inauguration officially marks the beginning of its operation, providing a reliable water supply that will benefit farming communities and strengthen agricultural productivity for generations to come.

During the ceremony, Administrator Guillen reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to expanding irrigation services and delivering projects that uplift the lives of Palawenyo farmers.

“Sa pamamagitan ng proyektong ito, inaasahan nating tataas ang produksyon ng pagkain, lalaki ang kita ng ating mga magsasaka, magiging mas matatag ang suplay ng pagkain, at higit na uunlad ang kabuhayan ng mga pamilyang Palaweño,” the Administrator said.

More than an infrastructure project, the Ibato-Iraan SRIP is a long-term investment in the welfare of the Filipino people. By providing a sustainable water supply, the project is expected to strengthen food security and create greater economic opportunities for farmers. Beyond improving livelihoods, it contributes to the sustainable development of Palawan and advances the vision of a more progressive Bagong Pilipinas.

NIA MIMAROPA Acting Regional Manager Engr. Edwin C. Nazareno, national and local government officials, partner agencies, irrigators’ association (IA) officers, farmers, and other irrigation stakeholders were present in the event.
