717 BOHOLANO FARMERS TO BENEFIT FROM MABINI-CAYACAY SRIP
NIA Region VII — A total of 717 farmers in Mabini and Alicia, Bohol can now look forward to more reliable irrigation water, higher farm productivity, and improved livelihoods following the inauguration of the P828.79-million Mabini-Cayacay Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) on June 22, 2026.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. led the inauguration ceremony, reaffirming the government’s commitment to empowering Filipino farmers through sustained investments in irrigation infrastructure and agricultural modernization.
Implemented by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) under the leadership of Administrator Engr. Eddie G. Guillen, the project is expected to provide year-round irrigation water supply to 530 hectares of agricultural land, benefitting farming communities in Barangays Abaca, San Roque, Aguipo, and Cabidian in the Municipality of Mabini, as well as Barangay Cayacay in the Municipality of Alicia.
The irrigation facility features a 32.20-meter-high and 210-meter-long dam, an ungated ogee weir spillway, and an 11.31-kilometer main canal designed to efficiently deliver irrigation water to farmlands. Drawing water from the Baujanan and Cawasan Creeks, the project is envisioned to increase cropping intensity, improve farm yields, and strengthen local agricultural production.
The Mabini-Cayacay SRIP forms part of the Marcos Administration’s continuing efforts to modernize the agriculture sector, expand irrigation services, and achieve long-term food security under the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas.
In his message, NIA Administrator Guillen emphasized that the project is more than just an irrigation facility; it is an investment in the future of Boholano farmers and their families.
“Sa NIA, malinaw ang utos ng ating mahal na Pangulo: maghatid ng mga proyektong tunay na nagpapabago ng buhay. At gaya ng lagi naming sinasabi: ‘NIA gets things done.’ Dahil sa huli, hindi lamang ito proyekto. Ito ay kinabukasan,” the Administrator said.
NIA Region VII Regional Manager Engr. Eusebio S. Villamanto, representatives from various national government agencies, local government officials, Irrigators’ Association (IA) officers, and farmer-beneficiaries attended the event.
As irrigation water begins to flow across the service area, the Mabini-Cayacay SRIP is expected to open new opportunities for agricultural growth and rural development, contributing to the country’s food security.
